Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 153 AM EDT Wed Oct 1 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure building in from the north will result in an extended period of dry and more seasonable weather through Monday. Next chance of rainfall comes during the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 140 AM EDT Wednesday...

Key Messages:

1) A few showers linger through sunrise.

2) Dry conditions as high pressure begins to take control.

A few lingering showers and clouds continue this morning as shallow moisture remains over the area. Will gradually see rain and clouds come to an end through the morning as high pressure sinks south, resulting in mostly clear skies later this afternoon and evening. Breezy northeast winds through the daytime as a drier airmass work into the region. Temperatures today will be on the warmer side with highs in the low to mid 70s, but much cooler tonight dropping into the 40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... As of 145 AM EDT Wednesday...

Key Message:

1. Dry weather through the week, with near normal temperatures.

A strong high pressure system will become centered over the northeastern US and southeastern Canada, and pushing down into the Mid Atlantic for the end of the work week. This will result in clear, sunny skies and cooler, but near normal temperatures, as northeasterly flow from the high will usher in a cooler and drier airmass. Afternoon high temperatures will range from the mid 60s in the west to low 70s in the east through the short term forecast period. Overall, expecting a cool, fall like period of weather for the end of the work week.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 145 AM EDT Wednesday...

Key Messages:

1. Dry weather prevails through the weekend and into the start of the work week.

2. Temperatures trend upward a few degrees.

Through the weekend, the surface high pressure will remain situated over the northeastern US, keeping cool and dry air in the region via northeasterly winds. Clear skies and no precipitation is expected. However, with the high pressure holding steady over the region, and under clear skies, temperatures will climb upward a few degrees over the weekend, with highs reaching the upper 60s to low 70s in the west, and upper 70s in the east through the period. Still should feel pleasant, with a lack of moisture in the air keeping humidity values low.

Towards the start of the next work week, the center of the surface high will slide offshore, and flow over the region will transition to more easterly and then southerly. This will result in a gradual uptick in dewpoints, as moisture is advected into the region off the Atlantic. A cold front looks to push eastward into the Great Lakes and Midwest by Monday, and will continue to move towards the central Appalachians by Tuesday, which will bring about an increase in precipitation chances for the area.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 145 AM EDT Wednesday...

Conditions continue to improve across the region as a drier airmass begins to move in. Widespread VFR this morning and should continue to see VFR for the 24 hour TAF period, with the exception being brief patchy fog development across the mountains this morning.

Winds from the northeast today, gusty east of the mountains, possible as high as 20kts at times. Winds subside again tonight...light to calm.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

Dry high pressure will keep an extended period of VFR into the weekend, outside of morning patchy fog.
