.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Issued at 323 AM CDT Thu Oct 2 2025

Upper level ridging remains in place over the western United States, with a deepening trough observed off the West Coast. A weak surface boundary is tracking across the Sandhills early this morning, with little temperature difference across the boundary. 850 mb flow continues out of the south, bringing warm air advection aloft across the region. This afternoon, mostly clear skies will allow for daytime heating across the region. This will set up another day of much warmer than average highs across the region, with highs in the mid to upper 80s across the region. For reference, our typical highs this time of year are around 70 degrees. Skies remain clear overnight, which will allow for overnight lows to drop into the 50s across the region.

A similar pattern remains for Friday, with potential for even warmer temperatures. Highs are expected to climb into the upper 80s across most of the region, with several locations breaking into the lower 90s. With stronger upper level flow and strong mixing in the lower atmosphere, winds become gusty again on Friday, with gusts of 25 to 30 mph across most of the region during the afternoon. Gusty winds remain overnight, which will limit the amount overnight lows drop off, keeping lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 323 AM CDT Thu Oct 2 2025

By Saturday, the upper level trough is expected to be across the Rocky Mountains, with a deepening surface low over South Dakota. The deepening low will bring a cold front across the region Saturday evening, ushering in cooler temperatures and our next appreciable chances for rainfall across the region. Before the frontal passage, one more afternoon of very warm temperatures is expected, with highs climbing into the upper 80s once again. However, areas across northwestern Nebraska may get the cold front a bit earlier, capping highs in the low 80s. With the deepening low over South Dakota, a strong pressure gradient develops across the region, creating some very windy conditions across the region. Southerly winds ahead of the cold front climb to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts in excess of 40 mph. The gustiest winds are expected from southwest Nebraska into north central and central Nebraska, basically along and east of an Ogallala to Valentine line. By the evening, showers and thunderstorms along the cold front bring rain across the region, with portions of northwestern Nebraska expected to receive the higher precipitation amounts.

High pressure builds in behind the cold front on Sunday afternoon, which will help keep cooler temperatures advecting into the region. Highs on Sunday climb into the 60s, with a few locations reaching into the low 70s. Winds remain on the gusty side as the low tracks out of the region, though gusts are only expected to sporadically reach up to 30 mph.

An active pattern is expected early next week, as several surface disturbances track across the Plains. This will introduce low end rain chances early to mid week across portions of the region. Most notably, temperatures will remain cooler than average through mid week. Highs are expected to be coolest on Monday, with highs mostly remaining in the 50s. Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday begin to climb into the 60s. While this is still cooler than average, it is worth noting the second week in October is when our average highs drop into the high 60s. With these cooler temperatures by day, overnight lows begin to dip into the upper 30s to lower 40s. Will need to keep an eye on these lows, as overnight lows have been a bit on the "warm" side of the forecast recently, so there is potential that lows could drop even cooler early next week.
