Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 825 PM EDT Tue Sep 9 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Surface high pressure will prevail into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/... Tonight: The mid/upper levels will consist of weak troughing across the Southeast United States through the night. At the sfc, a stationary front will remain south of the region while high pressure centered over New England builds in from the north. The pattern will yield a dry forecast for all areas, but also cooler conditions under few high clouds, due to light northeasterly winds and cold air advection occurring overnight. In general, temps should dip into the mid-upper 50s well inland to low-mid 60s for remaining areas, warmest near the beaches.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/... Wednesday through Friday: Aloft, troughing will prevail across the region with the trough amplifying from the Mid Atlantic southward into Friday. At the surface, high pressure will prevail inland along the Eastern Seaboard through the end of the week. Model consensus continues to favor dry conditions across the forecast area with gradually warming temperatures. For Wednesday we anticipate low to mid 80s for southeast SC and upper 80s for southeast GA. Then for Thursday and Friday, mid to upper 80s will be common with a few spots hitting 90 across interior southeast GA.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Troughing should prevail through the weekend before attempting to shift offshore early next week as ridging starts to extend in from the west. Still not much change expected at the surface as high pressure remains the dominant feature and we remain in a relatively dry pattern. Overall the forecast is dry with temperatures returning to the upper 80s and low 90s by late this weekend or early next week.

&&

.AVIATION /01Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... VFR conditions are expected to prevail at CHS/JZI/SAV terminals through 00Z Thursday. Northerly winds could top out in the 10-15 kt range at all terminals late Wednesday morning, but should gradually weaken Wednesday afternoon.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Mostly VFR though there is a low end potential for few periods of restricted ceilings due to late night/early morning stratus.

&&

.MARINE... Tonight: A stalled front will be positioned just south of the local waters while high pressure builds in across land zones. This will yield a pinched pressure gradient into evening hours, resulting in northeast winds generally in the 15-20 kt, although a few gusts to 25 kt are possible beyond 10 nm from the coast through about midnight. Seas ranging between 4-6 ft across nearshore waters will slowly subside to 3-5 ft overnight. The improving trend should favor Small Craft Advisories coming to an end across nearshore waters during the second half of the night, possibly several hours prior to 6 AM Wednesday. Seas near 6-8 ft across outer Georgia waters will also subside, generally to 5-6 ft after midnight, but a Small Craft Advisory will continue across outer Georgia waters through the night.

Wednesday through Sunday: Northeast flow is expected to prevail across the local waters through the weekend. Wind speeds should diminish beginning Wednesday night, with a another surge expected to return Friday into the weekend. Another round of advisories could be needed during the weekend time period due to increased winds and seas.

Rip Currents: The combination of persistent northeast winds, astronomical factors, and elevated swell will yield a Moderate Risk of rip currents at all beaches Wednesday. Another Moderate Risk at all beaches is likely again on Thursday under similar conditions.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Astronomical tide levels will remain elevated through the rest of the week due to the recent full moon and upcoming lunar perigee (9/10). Total water levels will also be high with the tidal departure increasing due to the pinched pressure gradient/elevated northeast winds. As a result, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect across coastal zones of Southeast South Carolina and Southeast Georgia until midnight tonight.

Additional Coastal Flood Advisories could be needed for saltwater flooding during the mid-late morning high tide cycles through late week, even though tidal departures will start to come down Thursday into Friday as the pressure gradient beings to relax.

&&

.CHS WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... GA...Coastal Flood Advisory until midnight EDT tonight for GAZ117- 119-139-141. SC...Coastal Flood Advisory until midnight EDT tonight for SCZ048>051. MARINE...Small Craft Advisory until 6 AM EDT Wednesday for AMZ350-352- 354. Small Craft Advisory until 8 PM EDT Wednesday for AMZ374.
