Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Columbia SC 1117 AM EDT Wed Oct 1 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Cool and dry weather expected through the rest of the week as northeasterly flow strengthens. Rain chances increase again Sunday and into early next week as moisture increases.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Key message(s):

- Breezy winds as drier air moves into the region - Cooler tonight with below normal temperatures

Much drier air is evident today already as persistent northeasterly winds continue and will be breezy with some gusts over 20 mph into the afternoon as the upper trough axis shifts southward through the region. Mainly scattered high clouds expected today and with more sunshine temperatures should be a bit warmer with highs expected in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Forecast soundings show continued drying of the atmosphere with deep mixing expected today.

A dry front will cross the region tonight reinforcing the drier air mass while adding some cold advection which will drop our low temperatures into the 50s areawide, despite non ideal radiational cooling as winds are expected to remain up through the night.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Key message(s):

- Cool and dry weather expected.

- Breezy at times, especially during the daytime hours.

Upper trough moves eastward, being replaced by building ridging by the end of the short term. At the surface, high pressure to the north will maintain a northeasterly flow keeping the region cooler and dry. PWAT values will range from 0.5 to 0.75 inches at daybreak Thursday, rising gradually through the period. A tight pressure gradient will produce gusty winds during the day but it appears that values will remain below Lake Wind Advisory criteria. Temperatures will be below normal both days with forecast highs in the mid to upper 70s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Key message(s):

- Rain chances increase Sunday and into early next week.

- Temperatures return to seasonal values.

Weak upper ridging will be the primary driver of the weather during the extended. Meanwhile, high pressure shifts off the New England coast, allowing moisture to return to the FA. After a dry day on Saturday, shower chances will rise on Sunday and into early next week as moisture moves in from the Atlantic. Temperatures gradually warm, returning to seasonal values by the end of the extended.

&&

.AVIATION /15Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... NE winds and VFR conditions expected

As Imelda pulls away from the area some mid level clouds persist over the region with VFR ceilings. Well-mixed low levels will prevent fog development. A 25 kt LLJ will mix down this morning allowing NE gusts up to 20 kts through midday. Winds speeds should diminish through the afternoon. No rain is expected today as drier air works into the region through NE flow. Winds will stay up again tonight and keep the low levels well mixed and prevent fog despite mostly clear skies.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...As moisture returns to the region this weekend we will see rain chances and the chance for restrictions increase.
