.DISCUSSION... Issued at 314 AM CDT Tue Sep 30 2025

Early this morning, the mid/upper ridge axis continues to remain draped from the Upper Midwest to the central Gulf Coast with a weakening shortwave trough slowly progressing north and east across the southern and central plains. Lift ahead of this trough has induced widespread mid to upper level cloud cover; however, as the trough exits later today, subsidence on the back side should allow for gradual clearing, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

By Wednesday, increasing heights/thicknesses will slowly build in from the southwest, and a gradual warming trend is forecast from the middle of the week through the first half of the weekend. In general, afternoon highs and overnight lows will be around 5 to 10 degrees above average for the start of October. Additionally, this strengthening ridge will prolong this dry period the region has experienced (albeit a somewhat welcome break from the wet period the area has seen since the end of May).

Towards the latter half of the weekend, eyes will turn towards the west as a rather strong deep layer trough is forecast to eject into the central and northern plains bringing cooler temperatures and perhaps a few chances for showers and storms. Currently, the best rain chances appear to be across the northern half of Kansas and into Nebraska, but details like this will come into focus over the next few days. Be sure to stay tuned for updates.

Broken to overcast mid-level clouds have overspread much of the area this morning, but should clear out by this afternoon or evening. Despite this, VFR conditions will prevail over the next 24 hours. Light and variable winds this morning will generally become more uniform out of the south by this afternoon. Sustained winds will be around 5 to 10 knots, but portions of central Kansas could see gusts exceed 20 knots at times this afternoon.
