Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Spokane WA 1130 AM PDT Tue Sep 16 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Breezy easterly winds tonight into Tuesday across the Cascades.

- Warm and dry Tuesday through the end of the week.

&&

.SYNOPSIS... Winds will be breezy from the east on Tuesday. High pressure over the region with a warm and dry conditions through the work week. Unsettled weather returns this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION... Tuesday through Thursday: An upper-level ridge building over the Pacific Northwest has brought clear skies to the Inland Northwest. Following Sunday and Mondays rain, lingering boundary layer moisture and light winds have allowed fog and low stratus to develop in the valleys of northeast Washington and north Idaho, which is evident on nighttime microphysics imagery. Temperatures trend warmer for today (Tuesday) especially in eastern Washington and north Idaho where widespread cloud cover kept highs in the upper 50s to low 60s on Monday. Highs today will run about 5F warmer in central Washington and up to 20F warmer in eastern Washington and north Idaho. Initially the center of the upper-level ridge will be west of the Cascades with a thermally-induced surface trough and offshore (easterly) flow across the PNW. By Wednesday the ridge shifts east of the Cascades as a weakening front and upper- level trough brush western Washington. This feature will struggle to move inland but will amplify the ridge downstream. Highs will warm into the 80s to low 90s Wednesday and remain consistent through the end of the workweek.

Friday through Monday: Models and ensembles agree that another trough and cold front will move into the Pacific Northwest this weekend, though timing and strength remain uncertain. Current guidance suggests this front will be stronger than recent ones, bringing increasing chances for precipitation and gusty winds. The best precipitation chances remain in the mountains (15-30%) with less than 10% in the lowlands. The NBM shows a 20-30% chance of wind gusts over 40 mph from the lee of the Cascades into the Columbia Basin, West Plains, and Palouse on Saturday, increasing to 40-60% on Sunday. This will be a period to monitor closely. /vmt
