Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 626 AM EDT Sun Sep 28 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Drier weather expected today as weak high pressure builds into the region. Increasing clouds and rainfall chances Monday and Tuesday, but confidence is increasing that any impacts from the tropics will be minimal. Dry high pressure returns again for the middle of the week, remaining in place through next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 120 AM EDT Sunday...

Key Messages:

1) Foggy this morning, but gradual clearing through late morning.

2) A mostly dry day is expected.

Rain is gradually coming to an end this morning, but areas of fog will increase through sunrise. An upper disturbance responsible for the rainfall the past few days finally moves east and weak high pressure will begin to build in through today. This will result in a mostly dry day with the only exception being a few isolated showers that may develop in the higher terrain this afternoon. Anything that does develop should be short-lived and will diminish by sunset this evening. Another round of fog is possible again tonight.

Should we clear out from clouds today, afternoon temperatures will be warm in the mid upper 70s to lowers 80s. Mild nighttime lows in the upper 50s to low 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... As of 130 AM EDT Sunday...

Key Messages:

1) Confidence increasing that future current TD09 will remaining off the United States Coast.

2) Rain amounts have continued to decrease, but a few periods of rain possible Monday and Tuesday.

Current TD09 is still expected to become Tropical Storm Imelda by Monday, and possibly reach hurricane status by Monday night. Closer to home, only impacts locally on Monday look to be increasing clouds cover and a few showers across the Piedmont as tropical moisture is pulled northward. By Tuesday, Imelda will approach the South Carolina coastline, but should remain offshore. Additional tropical moisture could be pulled northward and spread across the Carolinas and portions of Virginia. However, the trend over the past few runs of guidance have shown decreasing rainfall amounts. At the moment, Tuesday has the best chance for rainfall, but amounts now look to remain less than an inch with highest amounts across north central North Carolina.

High pressure will begin to press further south, blocking Imelda from any further northward movement and the system eventually follows Humberto east out into the Atlantic away from the United States. Guidance has continued to come into much better agreement about this scenario and if this indeed occurs, expect a mostly dry Wednesday with mainly just some cloud cover.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 145 PM EDT Sunday...

Key Messages:

1) Dry high pressure will build in from the north leading to drier weather through next weekend.

Guidance has come into better agreement that high pressure will begin to build in across the east CONUS. This should lead to a drier stretch of weather continuing into next weekend. Somewhat of a wedging pattern sets in as well with flow generally out of the north-northeast. This should lead to slightly below normal daytime high temperatures and cool overnight lows in the 40s and 50s.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 625 AM EDT Sunday...

Mostly sub-VFR this morning with multiple terminals at IFR/LIFR. Areas of fog and low cigs will continue through just after daybreak.

Will see gradual improvements by 13-15z with VFR returning. Should have VFR continue through this evening with dry conditions expected. Some areas of fog again tonight, mainly across the mountains.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

Rain may return Monday and Tuesday as easterly flow brings moisture back into the area from the Atlantic Coast. Occasional sub-VFR is possible, especially Monday night and Tuesday night. Expecting VFR Wed-Sat, except for patchy morning fog.
