Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Forks ND 703 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Near critical fire weather is expected across northwest and west central Minnesota Sunday afternoon.

&&

UPDATE Issued at 620 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

With RH now back above 25 percent across northwest Minnesota will allow the SPS to expire on schedule at 7pm. Regardless the well above normal heat for late september and the breezy conditions are certainly putting in work to dry down vegetation with once again concerningly low RH tomorrow afternoon across north central Minnesota of 20-25 percent. While winds will be slightly lower this may warrant another SPS for near critical conditions.

.DISCUSSION... Issued at 332 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

...Synopsis...

Ridging prevails across the Northern Plains today through early next week, bringing continued warm and dry weather to the region. Our next chance for precipitation looks to be late Tuesday into Wednesday as a shortwave moves through northwest Minnesota. This will be the first of several chances as we head into the second half of next week. As the H5 ridge continues east, southwest flow forms across western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. This will bring a potentially unsettled pattern into the area late next week and into the weekend.

...Near Critical Fire Weather Through Late this Afternoon...

RH values are currently in the 20 to 30 percent range across much of the area, with northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph. Dew points will slowly increase into the 40s this evening and bring the RH values into the 40 to 50 percent range as temperatures fall. Winds are not expected to increase, although a few gusts just over 20 mph are possible.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z SUNDAY/... Issued at 620 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

VFR conditions for all through the next 24 hours with winds (namely any gusts) posing the only hazards to aviation. Gusts dropping off as we decouple in the next 1-2 hours for all but TVF and possibly DVL as the ridge axis on the northwest of the high pressure to the south keeps a stronger pressure gradient across these sites overnight. Winds gusts return for all by noon tomorrow with gusts of 15-20kts being widespread.
